Khan was raised a Catholic. She attended her parish of Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church as her elementary school. Her mother is the reason she was introduction to jazz music when she was a young. Khan was first exposed to the rhythm and blues when she was in her teens. When she turned 11, Khan began a group along with Taka, which is also one of Khan's sisters. Khan and her mother's daughter Connie participated in civil rights protests in the late 60s. Connie was an active supporter and a good friend of Fred Hampton. Fred Hampton is an Chicago resident and Black Panther Party member. Many have believed the fact that Chaka was her nickname when she joined the Panthers. Khan has clarified that her name was actually the Yoruba Baba had given her her first name Chaka Adunne Aduffe. She left in 1969 the Panthers and quit high school after having gone to Calumet High School and Kenwood High School (now Kenwood Academy). She first began performing around Chicago with small groups, including her boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka Khan along with Hassan were married in 1970.
